WASHINGTON, D.C. — The world really has gone crazy now, literally.

Old men have been saying this since Biblical times.

Maybe a third of the people have always been crazy and we’re only confirming it now thanks to TV, Facebook — and the social science of Psychiatry.

It turns out there is an actual clinical term for people who voted for Donald Trump and continue to support him: The word “delusional” is not just a slur you use in Facebook comments for your dumbest friends. In psychiatry the word “delusion” means a firm belief in some idea which is known to be false, and it can be a symptom of paranoia or psychosis. That’s according to Psychology Today magazine.

The Denial of Reality: Many people deny truths even when presented with irrefutable scientific data!

Look no further than Tangier Island in the Chesapeake Bay off the coast of Virginia for a classic, real world example of a delusional people.

We should send in a team of researchers to study this place right away before it disappears. It’s an island with only 450 residents, down from 727 according to the census of 2010, apparently mostly crab fishermen, and it’s literally going under water due to rising seas from climate change due to global warming from the burning of fossil fuels. It’s lost 67 percent of its landmass since 1850, and it is expected to be totally under water by 2050 if not sooner. One more super storm could do it.

Yet Tangier Island Mayor James “Ooker” Eskridge was recently interviewed on CNN and got a personal call from President Trump for denying that rising sea levels had anything to do with his island being underwater every time it rains and the wind blows.

Trump tells Tangier Island mayor not to worry about sea-level rise

Tangier Island is “a huge supporter of Donald Trump,” the mayor said in the phone call. “This is a Trump island; we really love you down here.”

Trump apparently told Eskridge not to worry about rising seas, even though the mayor could look out his window and see it with his very own eyes and look at the data showing the island literally going under water.

“He said, ‘Your island has been there for hundreds of years, and I believe your island will be there for hundreds more,'” Eskridge claims the president said.

Classic delusion.

If Trump doesn’t believe in climate change, global warming, rising seas, or government solutions, he’s certainly not going to lift a finger to help save the island. Nowhere is there a more stark example of a people voting against their best interests. The island is a Republican stronghold, where 87 percent of residents voted for Trump in 2016.

According to a new, detailed study of American voters by the Pew Research Center, Trump voters still have “warm” feelings for him.

Hang on. I just threw up my banana muffin in my mouth.

Warm feelings?

The island is losing 16 feet of coastline a year and they expect taxpayers to build jetties and a seawall to protect them, and they voted for the one guy guaranteed NOT to help them?

Delusional.

“Residents here are extremely scared that if something isn’t done soon, their homes and livelihoods will be washed away by the Chesapeake Bay,” Eskridge said.

The president told him not to worry about it.

Yet he still said, on national television: “This is a Trump island; we really love you down here.”

Jesus freaking christ what will it take for people to connect the dots and see the writing on the wall about their own futures?

“You’re my kind of guy,” Trump apparently told the mayor.

Of course he is. Trump knows he needs that one third of the people who do not know reality when they see it right before their very eyes to win elections. That’s Trump’s base and he knows it.

Now if we could just get the Democratic socialists and the socialist Democrats to stop fighting with one another and actually turn out to vote for a Democrat, we might be able to put enough voters together to beat the Delusional Republicans. It would help if we could get someone writing for the New York Times or the Washington Post who understands how to communicate with people. Do you understand this article at all?

Democratic socialists are conquering the left. But do they believe in democracy?

Oh, you can’t afford to pay for it and you think a “free press” means it’s free to read on Facebook.

Nevermind. We’re doomed.

I’m delusional for thinking there is any hope to save the world through real journalism. Even the people who have the money are not going to pay for it.

Good luck.

Before you continue, I’d like to ask if you could support our independent journalism as we head into one of the most critical news periods of our time in 2024.

The New American Journal is deeply dedicated to uncovering the escalating threats to our democracy and holding those in power accountable. With a turbulent presidential race and the possibility of an even more extreme Trump presidency on the horizon, the need for independent, credible journalism that emphasizes the importance of the upcoming election for our nation and planet has never been greater.

However, a small group of billionaire owners control a significant portion of the information that reaches the public. We are different. We don’t have a billionaire owner or shareholders. Our journalism is created to serve the public interest, not to generate profit. Unlike much of the U.S. media, which often falls into the trap of false equivalence in the name of neutrality, we strive to highlight the lies of powerful individuals and institutions, showing how misinformation and demagoguery can harm democracy.

Our journalists provide context, investigate, and bring to light the critical stories of our time, from election integrity threats to the worsening climate crisis and complex international conflicts. As a news organization with a strong voice, we offer a unique, outsider perspective that is often missing in American media.

Thanks to our unique reader-supported model, you can access the New American journal without encountering a paywall. This is possible because of readers like you. Your support keeps us independent, free from external influences, and accessible to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay for news.

Please help if you can.

American journalists need your help more than ever as forces amass against the free press and democracy itself. We must not let the crypto-fascists and the AI bots take over.
