WASHINGTON, D.C. — Four more Trump supporters have been tracked down, arrested and charged for attacking the United State Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021, actions that threatened to disrupt a joint session of the Congress convened to certify the electoral votes in the 2020 presidential election.

Florida Man and Woman Arrested for Assaulting Police During Capitol Attack

A Florida man and woman have been arrested and charged for their actions during the Capitol attack, including assaulting law enforcement officers.

Bryan Roger Bishop, 51, of Marathon, Florida, is charged in a criminal complaint filed in the District of Columbia with civil disorder and assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers with a deadly and dangerous weapon, both felony offenses.

In addition, Bishop is charged with misdemeanors, including entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds; engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds; and engaging in an act of physical violence on Capitol grounds or buildings.

Bryan Bishop was arrested on Aug. 7, 2023, and made his initial appearance in the Southern District of Florida. Authorities also arrested Tonya Bishop, 47, of Marathon, Florida, on misdemeanor charges related to her actions at the Capitol, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

She made her initial appearance in the Southern District of Florida as well. They are a married couple so caught up on Trump’s claims of a stolen election that they traveled to Washington and participated in the attempted insurrection to halt the peaceful transfer of power and overturn the 2020 election.

According to court documents, on Jan. 6, 2021, at approximately 2 p.m., rioters at the U.S. Capitol building breached various barriers that had been erected on the west side of the building and were attempting to overwhelm police officers in the area. At approximately 2:02 p.m., a man, later identified as Bryan Bishop, wearing an olive-colored beanie, tan neck gaiter over his face, and outer grey jacket with an orange interior, emerged from the crowd of rioters and aimed a red colored device at the line of officers, assaulting the law enforcement officers by spraying them with an orange-colored chemical irritant.

Additional video footage from that day depicts the incident from another angle. In this video, a man, later identified as Bishop, can be seen spraying two Metropolitan Police Department officers in the face with a chemical substance. After spraying the first officer directly in the face, Bishop then sprayed the second officer in the face shield and then aimed the device at an upward angle to spray under the officer’s face shield and directly into the face.

Law enforcement authorities also conducted a review of CCTV taken footage from inside the U.S. Capitol building and identified Bishop as he entered at approximately 2:39 p.m. Bishop is then seen walking amongst various rooms, including the Rotunda, Statuary Hall, and Statuary Hall Connector. While inside the Capitol, Bishop spoke with various individuals, appearing to ask for directions on several occasions. Bishop then exited the Capitol at approximately 2:56 p.m. through the East Rotunda Doors.

This case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section. Valuable assistance was provided by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida. This case is being investigated by the FBI’s Miami, San Antonio, and Washington Field Offices, which identified Bishop as BOLO (“Be On the Look Out”) #466 on its seeking information photos. Valuable assistance was provided by the U.S. Capitol Police, the Metropolitan Police Department, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Pennsylvania Man Arrested for Assaulting Police During Jan. 6 Capitol Attack

A Pennsylvanian man has been arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges, including assaulting law enforcement with a deadly or dangerous weapon, related to his conduct during the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Lowell Gates, 63, of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, is charged in a criminal complaint filed in the District of Columbia with assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers using a dangerous weapon and obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder, both felony offenses. In addition to the felonies, Gates is charged with several misdemeanor offenses, including entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct in a Capitol building or grounds, violent conduct in a Capitol building or grounds.

Gates was arrested in Harrisburg and made his initial appearance in the Middle District of Pennsylvania, according to a press release from the Justice Department.

According to court documents, Gates traveled to Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6, 2021, with a group of friends and attended a rally at the Ellipse. Gates then walked toward the U.S. Capitol building on Pennsylvania Avenue and approached the restricted grounds of the West Plaza. Video footage taken from that day shows Gates appearing to use a cell phone to photograph and or video the riot while standing near the scaffolding on the side of the West Plaza.

Court documents show that at approximately 2:29 p.m., Gates can be seen on body-worn camera footage throwing an object at a group of law enforcement officers before assaulting them with a flagpole. Video footage shows Gates using the flagpole in a spear-like motion to lunge at the officers, striking at them at least three times.

This case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section. Connecticut Man Arrested for Assaulting Police During Jan. 6 Capitol Attack

A Connecticut man has been arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges, including assaulting law enforcement, related to his actions during the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Benjamin Cohen, 21, of Westport, Connecticut, is charged in a criminal complaint filed in the District of Columbia with civil disorder and assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers, both felony offenses. In addition to the felonies, Cohen is charged with several misdemeanor offenses, including entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds, and engaging in an act of physical violence on Capitol grounds or buildings.

Cohen was arrested in Westport and made his initial appearance in the District of Connecticut, according to a press release from the Justice Department.

According to court documents, Cohen was identified by law enforcement authorities among the crowd of rioters gathered along a police line on the West Plaza of the Capitol grounds on Jan. 6, 2021. Just before 2:29 p.m., open-source video and body-worn camera footage show Cohen joining rioters in breaching the police line and moving toward a group of officers. Cohen is then seen making physical contact with the group of officers by pushing and shoving them with his hands as the crowd surges forward.

Seconds later, Cohen rushes toward the officers again, shoving and striking officers with his hands. At some point shortly thereafter, video footage shows Cohen standing in the crowd of rioters, where he can be heard shouting, “Our House!”

Later, at approximately 2:48 p.m., Cohen is seen entering the Lower West Terrace tunnel, joining other rioters assembling against a police line. Cohen then makes his way deeper into the mob and begins to push against a rioter in front of him as additional rioters join the effort around him. Together, the mob pushed in a concerted “heave-ho” effort against the police line in the tunnel.

After the first “heave-ho”, Cohen participated in subsequent efforts in the tunnel against the police line. At approximately 2:56 p.m., a rush of additional rioters entered the tunnel, and those rioters, including Cohen, engaged in another “heave-ho” effort by moving their bodies in unison back and forth, pushing with coordinated force against the police.

By approximately 3:05 p.m., Cohen made his way back to the tunnel entrance and began rinsing his eyes after having apparently been sprayed by officers. Cohen remained with the mob just outside the tunnel until at least approximately 4:01 p.m., where he continued to assist combined efforts by the mob to push back into the tunnel.

Court documents show that at some point thereafter, Cohen was photographed inside an office inside the Capitol building situated with a window, which had been broken, just to the left of the tunnel entrance. Cohen is then seen in open-source video departing this office through the broken window.

This case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section. Valuable assistance was provided by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut. This case is being investigated by the FBI’s New Haven and Washington Field Offices, which identified Cohen as BOLO (“Be On the Look Out”) #379 on its seeking information photos. Valuable assistance was provided by the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department.

In the 31 months since Jan. 6, 2021, more than 1,106 individuals have been arrested in nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the breach of the U.S. Capitol, including over 372 individuals charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement. The investigation remains ongoing.
