The statue of Jefferson David still stands by the Alabama Capitol building in Montgomery: Glynn Wilson
Tales From the MoJo Road –

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – It’s raining hard now in the campground as I work on the first cup of coffee on Sunday morning. We could lose power or internet at any moment. But I am going to try to write a little something before it goes dark, like our democracy.

For some reason I think of the scene in the Lord of the Rings when Gandalf is reading from the book of dwarves in Moria. The thunder reminds me of drums in the deep.
“They have taken the bridge and the second hall. We have barred the gates but cannot hold them for long. The ground shakes, drums… drums in the deep.”
The situation seems dire, like there may be no escape. But then…
“Fly, you fools,” Gandalf says as he’s dragged into the abyss by the balrog. The company escapes.
These days look dark for American democracy. No one seems willing to stand up to Donald Trump as he turns the United States into Russia, turning the whole world against us.
I see from posts and comments on Facebook that some people are shutting down due to the state of the country, giving up.
Some people are apparently so despondent they have stopped eating. Some are being admitted to the hospital
One woman confessed to her doctor that a big part of her condition was anxiety caused by the national situation, according to one post. I won’t name the people involved or embarrass them. But as the story goes, her doctor said, “Yes, we’re seeing a lot of cases of DTS.”
She asked, “What’s that?”
He said, “Demented Trump Syndrome!”
Yes, Trump now has his own psychological disorder. Just seeing him on TV and hearing his voice causes depression for many.
So why can’t he be stopped? If the tech billionaires and the Democrats won’t stand up to him, what chance do any of us have?
I’ve advised some form of protest and resistance. Some people are talking about economic boycotts on social media, and others are carrying signs in parks in protest. I don’t think this will be enough. But it’s something. Trump just plays golf through it all, letting Elon Musk run roughshod over our government. All may be lost.
But last night, after I packed everything up to get ready to move on Sunday, it was such a lovely night in the campground that I vowed not to let Trump get me down. It was cool after a hot afternoon. The clouds moving in the wind in the night sky were lit up by a half moon directly overhead, lighting up the top of the trees too. A screech owl was moving about in the dark, hunting mice.
This, I thought, is why I chose the outdoor camping life. I will not get stuck in some too expensive suburban house watching news talk on expensive cable TV.
Let the thunder and lightening roll. I will not bow or break. Only move on to the next beautiful place.
See you down the dusty trail.
